Movement activity and localization of food were studied dynamically with the objective of establishing the capacities of behavioral adaptation of the young Dicentrarchus labrax faced with a novel situation. The role played by previous rearing conditions was demonstrated, the level of stimulation being a sensitive intervening factor (currents associated with the food). The data show the favourable effects of such treatment, and are in agreement with work carried out on higher vertebrates, which have brought to light the importance of early stimulation in behavioral ontogeny which respect to emotionality as well as capacities of adaptation in subjects reaching adulthood. |

The four Sparidae studied are coastal species that regularly enter the Mediterranean coastal salt lagoons. Changes in diet with regard to size class of fish, and occasionally season, are detailed. For each species, diets in the sea and in the lagoons are compared using several methods and show differences. Individuals from lagoons do not eat, or in very low numbers, mollusks, echinoderms and decapods. However, as their feeding is very rich and diverse, sparid fishes can probably find in the lagoons, whatever their age, the prey necessary to their growth. Trophic factors cannot explain age structure in lagoons and the absence of some age classes. |

The full exploitation of the world fishery resources has drastically modified the prospects and conditions for progress in fisheries. It was detenninant in the change of the Ocean Regime. Moreover, it widened considerably the range of issues which have to be addressed for an efficient use of marine living resources. Assessment approaches for complex fisheries, carrying capacity of basins and management of bivalve mollusc stocks, natural variability of fish stocks and management implications, methods for access regulation, economic rent, resources and use rights allocation, nature of aitisanal fisheries, strategies for fishery development in Third World countries, international dimensions of fisheries, etc. are among the issues reviewed in this book by... |

In the liver of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii ), vitellogenin (Vg) synthesis is influenced by oestradiol (E sub(2)) which is believed to act through the classical mechanism of steroid hormone action. After binding of the hormone to a soluble specific receptor protein, the oestradiol-receptor complex is translocated to the nucleus, where it interacts with DNA and modulates expression of Vg genes, leading to increased synthesis of specific mRNA and Vg. The authors show here: (i) the presence of specific oestrogen receptors in the cytosol of the male trout liver. (ii) The male liver, offering, an ideal experimental control of "zero" background, the authors followed - in the liver of male trouts - the kinetics of induction of Vg mRNA by hybridization with Vg... |

The author studies the microbial phenomena which occur during the maturation of French anchovies, some from the Basque, the others from the Roussillon coast. There are some differences in relation with the origin of the fishes. On a marine agar, the microflora of the Mediterranean ones is almost constant or in a light diminution while that of the Atlantic ones is climbing during 9 weeks before a decline. On an extremely salted agar and in the both origins the archaebacteria are increasing in number during 5 to 6 weeks and diminishing before. The complete ripening is obtained within 16-17 weeks. The limits of the significance of the microbiological analysis are discussed. |

In 2005, a flying fish Cheilopogon cyanopterus, which doesn't figure among the Europeans faunas although pointed out in 1973, is captured in the Bay of Biscay. Following the catch of a Cubiceps gracilis near the coast in Britain, the authors recapitulating the former descriptions indicate that adults of this oceanic species remain in the open sea. Only juveniles come, rarely, to the coast. The species figures in the diet of common dolphins, striped dolphins, swordfishes and tunas. NOT CONTROLLED OCR |

A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells. |

Using the fishing records from the most relevant ports of the Cantabrian and Galician coasts, th history of the anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus ) fishery in this area is reconstituted. The crisis observed and the variations in the fishing areas throughout the time are analyzed. An estimation of the age classes composition in the catches founded on commercial classification data can be made. The hypothesis of existence of a core population in the Southern part of the Bay of Biscay is presented and that only under certain advantageous condition the expansion of this species throughout all the Cantabrian Sea was possible. |

Introduction: To develop its 2005-2009 strategic plan, IFREMER made two prospective analysis studies in 2003: a thematic prospective analysis and a sectorial prospective analysis. The "aquafarming" sectorial prospective analysis, based primarily on an IFREMER idea, particularly brought to light the difference in nature of problems posed by the future evolution of shellfish farming, fish farming and other stockbreeding (pearl farming and shrimp farming). In addition, the prospective analyses made on an international scale by the FAO (2002, 2004) and the IFPRI (2003) emphasise that the development of aqua farming is the required condition for satisfying world demand of consumer aquatic products, given the foreseeable weak growth, indeed, the stagnation of... |

The scientist community, the fishing organisations and all involved parties show a growing interest in an integrated project management of the sea space exploited by fishing communities. A key to reach such a target is to make available reliable and precise scientist data on the different components of the fishing systems. For about twenty years, and in its mission to support the development of an integrated management for a sustainable use of marine resources, Ifremer has been organising monitoring campaigns of fishery resources along the shores of France. These campaigns aim at providing abundance indicator on species of interest. They consequently provide an essential knowledge base to characterize and trace the status of exploited fish and... |
